James Riley Smith Obituary

 James was the oldest son of George Nelson and Evelyn Smith Nelson. He was born in DeKalb, Texas on June 1, 1947. James received his formal education in DeKalb, Texas and graduated May 26, 1966 from Marvin Pynes school. James worked a myriad of jobs prior to his retirement from Terrell school district.


 


James dedicated his life to Christ at an early age in DeKalb, Texas. There he perfected his voice and love for music. He later performed in various gospel singing groups. He started a duet “The Gospel Crowns” with his life partner JoAnn Robinson.


 


James was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Robert and Mark Petty.


 


He leaves to cherish his memory brothers: Talmadge L. Sanders (Turlock, CA), George M. Nelson (San Diego, CA); Sisters: Shirley Burris (Terrell, TX), Kathy McCray, Evelyn Dollar, Vicky Jenkins, and Beverly Nelson (all of San Diego, CA); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and  friends.
