Obituary of Lora Washington

Please share a memory of Lora to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lora Washington, 89, of Pearland, Texas (formerly of Texarkana, Texas) passed away November 10, 2015 at her home. Lora Bell Aubrey Washington was born December 1, 1926, in Homer, Louisiana to Leon and Essie Aubrey. She joined Point Pleasant C.M.E. Church at an early age and attended school in Athens and Homer, Louisiana. She married Curtis Isaiah; to this union three daughters were born. Lora moved to Texarkana, Texas in 1942, and there she met her soulmate, Saul Washington, Sr. Not only did Saul gain a wife, but he happily received her three beautiful daughters whom he raised as his own. The births of five additional children rounded out the household at 2205 West 9th Street. Lora was a proud member and tireless worker of Hopewell C.M.E. Church. She served on the Addie Hudson Missionary Committee, the Stewardess Board (past President) and the Adult Choir for numerous years. She also represented her church and district as delegate to many local, state and national conferences. She was appointed the position of "Prayer Warrior" by Pastor C. Coleman. Working for Community Action Resource Services was Lora's most rewarding experience. Through this service, she helped a tremendous number of people in need and assisted in putting them on the road to recovery. Lora also supervised the Summer Lunch Program and was the Activity Coordinator for the Senior Citizens Center. The Rosehill Community was enriched by Lora's loving touches. She was very involved with the Parent Teachers Association of Theron Jones Elementary School and Dunbar High School and served as President of both. She was also an invaluable contributor to the Dunbar Booster Club, Texas High Booster, and Texas High Band Booster Clubs. Lora was a member of the Dunbar Alumni and Reunion Committee, and mother to a host of children throughout Texarkana. Additionally, her social involvements included memberships in the "We Wives Club," and "AMICAE Auxiliary" of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Lora was heavily involved in local, state, and national politics. She learned very early that a strong presence and voice ignited change, and she was a master of these tools. She had the high honor of serving as a Democratic Delegate to many Democratic conventions. Her unwavering service did not go unnoticed, for we all experienced the tilt of the entire room, when the Mayor of Texarkana came and read a proclamation and presented it to the Queen at her "80th" birthday party! On November 10, 2015 God's heavenly angels lovingly carried our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and confidante to her final home. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Saul Washington, Sr.; daughter, Loretha Rogers; and four sisters, Hazel, Marie, Mary and Pidgie. She leaves to Cherish her Memories: Children: Wilma Jean (Robert) Beatty - Union City, CA Pauline (Freddie) Hopkins - Little Elm, TX Saul Washington, Jr. - Houston, TX George (Sheila) Washington - Roseville, MI Mary Jacki Washington - Spring, TX Jessie (Lisa) Washington, Sr. - Pearland, TX Felecia Washington - Spring, TX Brother: Jodie Aubrey - Texarkana, TX Special Nieces: Gwen Jones - Texarkana, TX Essie Winzer - Homer, LA Special Nephew: James Darryl Shead - Texarkana, TX 17 Grandchildren, 26 Great-grandchildren, 4 Great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, extended family and friends, and Hopewell C.M.E.
