I remember Elder Gooden as a sincere, nice, "Man of God".
To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Mr. Gooden was ALWAYS lively, spry, and jovial in spirit! He shared stories of his life and experiences, his ministry, and of course...his days as the "shoe shine man"! It was only fitting that St. Michael's INCLUDED him when planning to build the new facility and move from the Arkansas location to Texas! His place on the first floor just next to the public elevators was always a bright spot on my rounds through the halls of the hospital! Mr. Ed made a lasting impression on EVERYONE that made his acquaintance. I was no different! Glad to say that I knew him and loved him! Praying for Thelma and his family, his church, and community...and the CHRISTUS St. Michael family.

Aww the memories of The Legend “Shoe Shine Man” Mr. Ed goes way back to when he had his lil shining area at the original St. Michael Hospital and moving with them to the Christus St. Michael now active where they saw to it his lil area was included with the building plan. Not only did he shine those boots & shoes, he shined himself! Now that doesn’t mean he didn’t speak when he needed lol. The most recent memories is him adding to his shining time a area that was made for him at the Electric Cowboy Club where Calvin also worked and when it got slow enough would hang with Mr. Ed. Oh he’d get him going lol! Once said,”Mr. Ed, looks like they’re busy dancing.” He replied, Yeah they could have left me with business (their boots) while they out there showing off.” Calvin said,”Now Mr. Ed, you know you kicked a leg back when.” Mr. Ed chuckled a lil and said,”You know how that goes.” My last to see him was when our grandson and I were at the hospital and there’s no way you could go without stopping and visiting Mr. Ed in which husband hung out with him some there when working. That’s when he was telling he going to take a lil break. Thinking he may retire. I said,“Mr. Ed, you know you said that before and didn’t cause so many didn’t make it that easy and you’d miss everyone.” He said, You sho right about that!” We giggled and he was more than happy to get a picture with the grandson when asked and said, “I feel like I’ve known you a long time Mr. Ed cause everyone talks about you!” He replied, I was right here when you was born.” Grandson’s surprised look we said a goodbye. Until we meet again “Mr. Shoe Shine Man!” HUGS to the Family and all who knew Mr. Ed!

He came into the Gift Shop at Christus St. Michael’s often. He was a pleasure to talk with and I enjoyed waiting on him. He usually wanted a pack of spearmint gum. He would open up his billfold and tell me to get out a dollar. He was a very nice gentleman and I missed him when he closed up his shoe shine stand and retired. My condolences to his family. Sincerely, Wanda
